Almost all of the antique sewing machines can be both - collectible and usable. Since they were well-engineered and their dependability is legendary, they are popular even in our modern days. Depending on a model, the value of an antique sewing machine is usually high. It is determined by machine’s condition and completeness, plus the rarity of its model.

Sewing machines are one of the key inventions that have helped to shape the modern world. They were invented during the first Industrial Revolution with the intention of decreasing amount of manual sewing work performed in cloth companies - ↓↓↓

Most popular antique sewing machines

The oldest and the most popular antique sewing machines were made by Singer and date back to 1865. It is rather hard to find a model this old, but there are available models dated from 1940s to early 1970s.

Among all models manufarctured by Singer, quite a few are still very popular. Singer antique sewing machine models 301a, 301, 221 and 222 - so called Featherweight and model 66 are the most popular. Of these, the Singer Featherweight 221 is a classic model introduced in 1933 at the Chicago World’s Fair and continued to be manufactured until 1960 in the US and until 1971 in Scotland.

It is a “collectible” of the first order even if that can be a pricey item. In case of looking for an antique sewing machine not from a collector’s point of view, the Singer 301 or 301a are as good as Featherweihts and can be found for about a third of what the Featherweight might cost.

Besides Singer, there are many other antique sewing machines manufacturing companies, like Bradbury, Jones, Frister and Rossmann.

The general answer of worth of an antique sewing machine is it is worth only what one person is willing to pay and another person is willing to accept. That is 'in general'. Many antique machines are harder to find, maybe less of them made, thus worth more. One has to remember that in the late and early 1900's almost every other house had a sewing machine and they pretty much last forever. As far as being collectables there was a time in the not so far distant past that collecting was limited to how far one was willing to drive to find collectables. Now we have the internet. So called collectables, including sewing machines, came out of the woodwork and markets got flooded. Hummels are a good example of this. For sewing machines now it is Singer 221 Featherweights coming out, flooding the market and dropping collectable values. Thus dropping prices considerably. Pretty much collectable sewing machine values can only be evaluated by looking in places such as eBay and clubs online for what recent sales of these have brought.

I have a Bradbury Family V.S. with the celtic knot design and extra compartment. I researched this and found it was the very first with this compartment. It is in excellent condition along with its carrying case. What is a ballpark price on this?
